When it comes to weight loss, weight maintenance or honestly just being a healthy person I really stress eliminating sugar from drinks as much as possible.
Consuming sugar in drinks is one of the easiest ways to pack on weight or prevent yourself from losing weight. Plus with so many alternatives, it’s just not necessary.
Of course we want to limit sugar in food to but the fact of the matter is drinks are liquid and the sugar in them gets absorbed a lot more quickly causing your blood sugar to spike rapidly. That is not exactly what we want to do for weight loss or food cravings. Watch this video for how to decrease food cravings for more on that!
I love beverages because they typically take much longer to consume than eating food and can help fill you up due to their fluid content. These can also be good options when you feel like you are mindless eating or munching on something when not even hungry. Or honestly, they can just be a nice treat.
So below I wanted to share some of my favorite low sugar and calorie drinks that I love and use myself, all the time! I provided links in case you want to go check them out for yourself but most of these can also be found in your local supermarket.
Here are my 6 healthy beverage alternatives when trying to manage your weight…
Zevia
These drinks are a great sugar free soda alternative to any soda lovers out there. I’m not much of a soda person myself but I love of their root beer now and again. They also have other flavors like Dr.pepper, cola, ginger-ale, strawberry and seltzer waters too! I’ve gotten my family hooked on them.
Homemade Hot Chocolate
Making a healthy hot chocolate at home is perfect for those cold nights when you’re craving something sweet.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1.5 cups of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
2 tsp. of cacao powder or cocoa powder (cacao powder is a pure form of chocolate and is much higher in antioxidants. Plus to me it taste much better)
1 tsp. of vanilla extract
few shakes of cinnamon
pinch of sea salt
packet of stevia.
Instructions: Combined ingredients in a small pot. Over medium heat, continuously stir ingredients in pot with a whisk until it starts to bubble around the edges but don’t let it boil. Pour in to a cup, top with a little whip cream and enjoy!
Sparkling Water Or Seltzer
These are a great option when you are looking for something bubbly and refreshing! My favorite is Spindrift
Naturally Sweetened Herbal Tea
This warm beverage is perfect for when your cozying up on the coach on a chilly night or sitting at your desk at work! My absolute favorite are sugarcookie and gingerbread especially during this time of year!
Runa
Warning, runa provides lots of energy! Like, if you can’t handle coffee I wouldn’t drink this but if you are someone that lives off redbulls or monsters this can be a much more natural alternative. Nonetheless, it still gives amazing energy. Just be on the look out and read labels carefully because some flavors have no sugar but some have much more!
The Best Iced Coffee
The mix of Starbucks dark roast iced coffee blend unsweetened vanilla almond milk and 1 packet of stevia is seriously one of my favorite treats! I’ve gotten multiple friends and family members hooked on this one. Plus it winds up being so much cheaper than buying it at Starbucks. I also use this glass straw to sip treats like this since they are environmentally friendly 🙂
