If you know you want to lose weight for 2020 but can’t seem to get into the flow or mindset to do so, this post is for you!
Maybe you find yourself night after night doing the same habits you wanted to quit in the new year like grabbing your boyfriend’s Cheetos after dinner, even when you know you don’t really need or want them. Or maybe you feel pulled to binge eat Tostitos and salsa right when you get home from work because you are ravenous after eating so little all day. You feel instantly defeated and guilty directly after you take your last bite not because of the food but because you know it wasn’t necessary and it is not helping you achieve your goals. You didn’t want to have it but you just couldn’t stop yourself. This was literally me not that long ago. Can you relate?
So here’s the thing ladies … mindset is KEY. I’m all for using this time to get pumped for the new year but I want you to be set up for success so you can actually lose weight and keep it off for good. With my 1:1 clients this is something I dive deep into and we spend a good chunk of time on because at the end of the day if you do not work on your mindset and change your thought process, you can do any diet in the world but it wont keep the weight of for good. I’ve seen it happen over and over. I’ve done this myself and working on this is key to long term success.
We will be breaking this down into 3 steps in this post… motivation, visualization and planning!
Motivation
Understanding that motivation comes and goes is an important concept to grasp. Unfortunately, you cannot rely on it! One of my clients the other day that hit her maintenance goal and just off-boarded my program asked me how do you kick start your motivation if you ever feel like you want to push yourself again to achieve something?
Valid question and the main way I really find one can kick start their motivation is by simple just start doing the things. When we start implementing actions and seeing the results the motivation will come! Most people rely or wait for the motivation first but you will be waiting forever babe because it is really taking action that promote motivation.
To help do this I would create a new small SMART goals that is achievable for you and will promote an easy win. Small wins (I’ll be showing you how to do that later) give us a sense of accomplishing, which can help motivate you to keep the momentum going!
Another couple tips are switching things up like trying some new recipes or a new workout routine! I also find getting a little stricter with your diet by going back to basics and stick to whole foods (foods without an ingredient lists like vegetables, chicken, eggs, avocado, berries, etc.) for a period of time can provide that sense of accomplishment, help you feel really good and can be motivating. This should be used as the foundation for a new, more nutritious way of eating.
Visualization
With visualization you can figure out WHAT it is you Want and WHY you want it. So let’s fast forward to 6 months from now- you have lost x amount of weight, you see and feel the changes in your body, you see your clothes fitting you differently, you feel so confident and amazing and have created a lifestyle where you are jumping out of bed in the morning and you know you will never go back to your old ways because it is just who you are now. You feel stronger, happier, sexier, accomplished, excited to get dressed and just show up as a more positive person. Physically, you feel really good in your body. You can move around better. You are wearing clothes you love and feel so confident and sexy in. You are a better friend, spouse, worker all because you have elevated your life by prioritizing yourself, your health and your goals. What does this look like to you? How do you feel?
Seriously, take the time to write out exactly what this looks like for you feel? How would you act or think if you were that person today? You need to get in the mindset of yourself after you have achieved your goals and start acting like that person today! This is how you will thrive. This is why this step is SO important!
Planning
Now for putting this all into action. I want you to think about WHAT exactly is it that you want? DO you want to lose x amount of pounds?
Then you want to think about WHY you want this? Let’s dig deep here because the reality is when it comes to weight loss we want much more than the weight loss itself. Do you want to…
Have more energy
Look good in your bridesmaid dress
Stop thinking about the cookies in the break room all day long
Fit better in clothes
Feel confident in your bikini
Pick one as your main motivator, circle it and list everything you can think of that you need to do to achieve that goal!
For example:
Drink more water
Follow a certain way of eating
Eat more vegetables
Start a workout routine
Get better sleep
Manage stress
Now I want you to pick the easiest task and work on that first. This is your easy win and will help motivate you! You always go back to an easy win to help boost motivation when you need it.
For each of these tasks make sure to make them into SMART GOALS: Specific, Measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely! For example, I will drink 1/2 my body weight in oz of water every day!
After you have spent a few days or weeks getting that habit down pat to where it is becoming part of your routine, pick the thing that will move you most forward. This one may take longer but it is really going to make an impact on what you are trying to achieve. You may need help with this one…
For example, learning a way of eating that will help you achieve your goals. You may need more help with this one. Like a coach or accountability buddy. Maybe a course or a book!
